I.  General introduction

In 1994, the Department of Drilling and Production Petroleum Engineering was established with the mission of training, teaching, and researching in the field of petroleum drilling and production techniques.  The teaching and research staffs of the Department including Ph.Ds. and Ph.D. candidates are the permanent team of the University, in addition, there are many visiting staffs who are experts from domestic and foreign oil and gas companies.

II.  Educational programs

The department takes responsibility for teaching and training Petroleum Engineering with a focus on Drilling and Production for the undergraduate program (4 years), the master program (2 years) and the doctoral program (3-4 years)

Graduates will be able to perform the following works:

  • Research, design and construct of either petroleum exploration, appraisal wells, or production wells.
  • Design and operate technological equipment systems for production, gathering, treatment and transportation of oil and gas.
  • Analyze and improve production operations.
  • The petroleum curriculum program is oriented to the practical working environment with up-to-date teaching and training materials from the oil and gas companies; students’ professional skills are further enhanced by many practical operations and internships during the training process.

III.  Scientific research activities

The scientific research directions of the Department are diverse, related to techniques and technologies in the fields of drilling, production, gathering, treatment, and transportation of oil and gas as follows:

  • Improving drilling fluid properties.
  • Flow assurance (paraffin deposition, salt deposition in pipes, sand control, and so on)
  • Optimizing production operations and improving oil recovery.
  • Researching integrated solutions for different operators.
  • Researching and applying machine learning/deep learning to solve technical problems in the oil and gas field.
  • Lots of scientific papers have been being published either in the national journals and international journals, or keynotes of the international and national conferences.

IV.  External Relations

The Department has strong relationships with companies, organizations, research institutes, and universities, both nationally and internationally:

  • Vietsovpetro and the companies of Petro Vietnam – PVN (PVEP, PVD Deepwater, PVD Well Services, PTSC, PIDC, …)
  • The international oil and gas technical services companies (Schlumberger, Halliburton, Baker Hughes, BJ, …)
  • The international Society of Petroleum Engineers – SPE, American Association of Petroleum Geologists
